Abstract: Brazil is a country with huge hydroelectric generation possibilities; however these hydraulic reserves are far away from the consuming centers and at the same time in a region where environmental concerns are imposing many technical challenges. These reserves are mainly in the Amazon region. The present paper is aimed to introduce some of the studies being developed at our University with the objective of overcoming these challenges allowing a good use of this renewable energy source with minimum environmental impacts, and, possibly with less impact than thermal or nuclear power plants. These challenges include many non-conventional problems. The first is the long distances between the consuming centers and the hydroelectric power stations, which may be more than 2 or 3 thousands kilometers. The necessity to minimize dam-flooded area is another important problem to decrease environmental impacts. It is, also, fundamental to have the possibility to control fast and precisely the power flow in these long lines as well as the possibilities to supply power to small communities living nearby the transmission lines. This paper presents some of the works being developed at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro to present some new concepts of long distance electric energy transmission, including the possibilities of AC or DC transmission.
La charla será en español.
