Federico Lecumberry was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on July 27th, 1974. He received the B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Universidad de la República, Uruguay, in 2000, 2006 and 2012 respectively.
Currently holds a position as Associate Professor in Signal Processing with the Electrical Engineering Department (Instituto de Ingeniería Eléctrica de la Facultad de Ingeniería, IIE-FIng) at Universidad de la República. He is the current Head of the Signal Processing Department (IIE-FIng). He also has collaborations with the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo, where he was Principal Investigator and Head of the Signal Processing Laboratory (2013-2018). During 2008 and 2009 held a visiting position as Research Associate with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Minnesota.
He works in the fundamentals and applications of Signal/Image Processing and Machine Learning in different domains including biometry, biomedicine and medical imaging, in particular in fluorescence and cryo-electron microscopy, and several industrial applications. In the past he worked on geometric partial differential equations in computer vision applied to object segmentation, on disparity computation in stereo images and image and video codification. His research interests include Signal and Image Processing, Computer Vision, Machine Learning and Cryo-Electron Microscopy.
Dr. Lecumberry is a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, member (Nivel II) of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores in Uruguay and member of the Sociedad Uruguaya de Biociencias. He is also a researcher (Grado 3) of PEDECIBA – Mathematics (Programa de Desarrollo de las Ciencias Básicas).
